What Geico Actually Accepts as Proof

Geico accepts four document types: a report card showing at least a 3.0 GPA, a transcript from the current or most recent term, a dean's list certificate, or an honor roll letter from the school. The document must show the student's name, the school name, the term or semester, and the GPA or honor designation. A progress report does not qualify. A parent's statement does not qualify. The proof must come directly from the school.

For college students, Geico accepts unofficial transcripts printed from the student portal as long as the school name and GPA appear clearly. You do not need an official sealed transcript. For high school students, a photo of the report card works if all four required elements are visible. Geico processes submissions through their mobile app, their website upload portal, or by email to your agent. Faxed documents are accepted but processing takes longer.

The student must be under 25 years old and enrolled full-time. Part-time enrollment does not qualify. If your student took a semester off or dropped below full-time status, the discount will not apply for that term even if their cumulative GPA remains above 3.0. Geico verifies enrollment status separately from GPA, and both conditions must be met simultaneously.

Geico applies the good student discount per vehicle, not per policy. If you insure three cars and two students qualify, you must designate which student's discount applies to which vehicle at submission.

How the Discount Applies Across Multiple Vehicles

The discount does not automatically apply to every vehicle on the policy. You designate the assignment at submission, and that assignment stays locked until the next renewal when you re-verify.

This matters most when your students have different GPAs or when one student graduates mid-year. If your older student loses eligibility because they turned 25 or graduated, the discount on the vehicles assigned to them disappears at the next renewal. You cannot retroactively reassign those vehicles to your younger student's discount mid-term. The reassignment happens only when you submit fresh proof at renewal, which means you may pay the higher rate on those vehicles for up to six months before you can correct the assignment.

Renewal Timing and the 30-Day Window

Geico sends renewal notices 30 days before your policy term ends. The good student discount will not appear on that renewal notice unless you have already submitted updated proof. If you wait until after the renewal processes, you cannot add the discount retroactively. The new term rate is locked. You will pay the higher premium for the full six months, and the discount becomes available again only at the following renewal.

The safest approach: submit updated proof 45 days before renewal. Geico's processing time varies by submission method. App uploads typically process within 3 business days. Email submissions to your agent can take up to 7 business days depending on agent workload. If you submit proof 10 days before renewal and processing runs long, the renewal may finalize at the higher rate before the discount posts. Submitting early eliminates that risk.

If your student's most recent report card or transcript is not available 45 days before renewal because the term has not ended yet, submit the prior term's documentation as a placeholder and then submit the current term's proof as soon as grades post. Geico will apply the discount retroactively within the same term if the updated proof arrives before the next renewal cycle starts. This does not work across renewals. Once a new term begins at the higher rate, that rate is locked for six months.

What Happens When Your Student Turns 25 Mid-Term

Geico's good student discount eligibility ends the day your student turns 25, even if they are still enrolled full-time and maintaining a qualifying GPA. The discount does not phase out gradually. It disappears at the next renewal after their 25th birthday. If your student turns 25 in March and your policy renews in June, the June renewal will not include the good student discount on any vehicle assigned to that student, regardless of whether you submit updated proof.

This creates a planning problem for families with multiple students. If your older student is about to age out and you have a younger student still eligible, you need to reassign the vehicles at renewal. Geico does not handle reassignment automatically. You must submit the younger student's proof and explicitly request that the discount move to different vehicles. If you do not make that request, Geico will remove the discount entirely rather than assume you want it reassigned.
